Everyday life can be stressful. We have a lot on our minds and many of us worry about such things as going to college, finding a job, running your business or making the boss happy and still getting home in time to cook dinner. It takes a lot of discipline and resilience to go through the same routine every day without burning out. This discipline can be achieved by tweaking your morning routine just a tad bit so that you can wake up to joy instead of worry.
Productive people have credited having mindful mornings as a great factor in their success. What you do and what you think about just after you wake up sets the tone for the rest of your day.
Moreover, a set calming waking up routine is known to help people with mental health problems. Once you know how and what you’re going to do, it can help you control your anxiety. Waking up to a beneficial routine also helps calm your mind and help ease anxiety.
However, there’s no set routine that everyone can follow. You have to find what works for you. You can talk to your friends and family members and ask for tips but what works for them may not work for you. The best way to find something that benefits you is by trying everything that appeals to you.
Here are 5 tips to get you started:
If you go to bed and wake up at the same times for enough days in a row, your body will automatically start to recognize that as part of your biological clock. This means that with or without an alarm, your body will want to fall asleep and respectively wake up at the same time every day. Giving yourself an early start is known to be productive. Influencers like Robin Sharma and Ryan Holiday swear by it. Try waking up an hour earlier than your usual time. Give your body the space to adjust to the new routine.
Social media can directly relate to anxiety. Studies have also shown that people who wake up to reading or watching bad news first thing in the morning have a 27% more likelihood of reporting the rest of their day as “bad”. Try looking at your phone notifications and emails at least after the first hour after waking up. Allow your mind space to completely wake up before jumping into the activities of the day. Give yourself those few “off-the-grid” moments of mental peace.
Movement in the morning can really help you wake your body up. You can go for a run or a walk, try stretching or yoga, anything that helps the blood flow through your body. This will make you feel fresh and ready to take on the rest of the day.
The human body goes approximately 8 hours without the ingestion of water when it’s sleeping. Try drinking fluids in the morning. One of the healthiest drinks to wake up to is honey and lemon mixed in warm water. Other than that, drink water and then go for your morning coffee or tea.
Add an activity to your morning. Read a good book while you’re sipping your coffee or tea. Let the creativity flow through your brain. If you’re looking for something more therapeutic, tend to your plants. Water them and take your cup of tea out in the garden. Let the fresh air into your lungs.
Mindfulness is born from a routine. People get anxious when things are not in order. Once you know how your entire morning is planned out, it gives you a sense of hope and confidence to take on the heavier work like meeting deadlines and sitting for exams. Wake up to joy by nurturing your mind, body and spirt and make your day a holistic one.
