Walking Meditation

Meditation is one of the best and proven techniques for calming the mind. It also helps in building a balanced relationship between body, mind, and spirit. Studies have shown that people who meditate tend to have a more balanced view of the world. Hence, bringing meditation into your everyday life can do wonders and positively affect your life. However, sitting for long hours can be challenging for some people, especially those who are just beginning their meditation journeys.

There are several types of walking meditations, such as Kinhin or Zen, Yoga, mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh, Daoist, and many more. However, before delving into different walking meditations, it is important to understand what does it mean!

What Is Walking Meditation?

People often get confused between a general stroll with walking meditation. However, there is a difference because meditation is not simply going for a stroll at the beach or in a park and walking. It is much slower and requires you to coordinate your movements with your breathing as well as some other focusing techniques. It is more of a meditation than walking.

It is different from a seated meditation because your eyes are open, and your body is moving. In addition to that, there is also interaction with the world outside since you are in an open space. However, when your body is in a state of movement, you can find it easier to focus on your body's physical sensations and be more mindful of it. Hence, many find it easier to do a walking meditation over a seated meditation.

If you are ready to dive into it, let’s check out how you can practice it!

Important Thing To Note When Practicing Walking Meditation:

When you plan to practice walking meditation, you need to keep a few things in mind regardless of the type of walking meditation you plan to do. Here are the things that you need to consider:

  • Have a Positive Attitude:You must practice this meditation with a positive attitude and be patient with yourself. If it is your first time, you might get distracted often, but you must focus on deep breathing and bring back your attention.
  • Choose the Length of The Meditation:You must decide how long you want to practice this meditation. In the beginning, you can start with 10 minutes of slow walking, aligning your movements and breathing while also observing your body's sensations. Gradually, you can increase the length of your walking meditation.
  • Choose a Quiet Place: If you are a beginner, it is good to choose a quiet place like your backyard to start your walking meditation. This will help you stay focused without any external disturbance. It will help you go inwards easily without getting distracted by the outside world.
  • Go with a Slow Pace: It is always good to have a slow and steady pace to maintain consistency. Walk slowly. Your mind might get agitated initially, but you must align your steps with your breath, and you will start feeling better.

 Benefits of Practicing Walking Meditation?

There are many benefits of walking meditation if you practice it regularly. Some of them are listed below:

  • Helps with stress management and anxiety
  • Helps you get over lethargy and torpor
  • Improves the ability to focus
  • Replenishes both the body and mind
  • Helps in balancing feelings and emotions.
